  ACCESS INGENTA
A Columbus State University Faculty Development Initiative

WHAT IS INGENTA?
Ingenta is a document delivery service that provides access to more than 19 million articles from over 29,500 academic research publications delivered electronically or by FAX/Ariel. Ingenta is multi-disciplinary, with particular strengths in the fields of biology, life sciences, chemistry, and medicine; engineering and technology; and earth and environmental sciences. It is important to note that non-science fields are also represented. Access to the Ingenta database is through the Ingenta web site at www.ingentaconnect.com.
WHO CAN USE IT?
Anyone can use Ingenta as an index to locate citations on various topics. However, thanks to a new CSU faculty development initiative, fulltime CSU faculty may now order up to $500-worth of journal articles from Ingenta. This new CSU service is called Access Ingenta. Accounts have been created; each fulltime faculty member should have received an email memo from Ingenta containing user name and password information. Keep track of your user name and password! You will need to enter this information to order articles.
Please note that the $500 amount per fulltime faculty member is theoretical.  The CSU faculty development initiative is providing $25,000-worth of searches for the institution.  Once this amount is used up, CSU administration will need to evaluate the Ingenta project.  If results are positive, hopefully funding will be continued.
WHEN SHOULD YOU ORDER AN ARTICLE?
Before you order an article via Access Ingenta, check to make sure the article is not available in hardcopy from the CSU Libraries or electronically in a GALILEO or a CSU-purchased full-text database. If the article is not readily available, submit an ILL request for it—if you have time. Normally it takes 3 to 5 days to receive an article via ILL. Consult the handout entitled Locating an Article In a Specific Journal: A Guide for CSU Faculty for detailed instructions.
If the article is not readily available and you need it IMMEDIATELY, by all means use your Access Ingenta account!
HOW DO YOU ORDER ARTICLES?
Ingenta provides articles published from 1988 onwards for over 20,000 journals. However, for some journals, back issues are available prior to this date and the number is growing.
  • Use “Advanced Search” (at the top of the screen) for best search results. Search for the article using keyword, title, author, or journal title. There is also a “Quick Search” in the shaded area to the right. Often just the keywords of an article will be sufficient to pull up the required content.
  • Note at the bottom of the “Advanced Search” screen and under the “Quick Search” box, the buttons for “Electronic content” and “FAX/Ariel Content.” FOR MOST THOROUGH SEARCH RESULTS, YOU SHOULD EXECUTE YOUR SEARCH TWICE (IN BOTH OF THESE CATEGORIES). This is done by running the search 1st in the electronic database, (default) and then clicking on the tab button, “FAX / Ariel Content” to run the same search under this collection.
  • “Electronic Content” is the default search; here you will be searching a body of publications that are available immediately as PDF or HTML files. The “FAX/Ariel Content” button, executes your search in a body of publications that are not immediately available. Articles retrieved and ordered in this search mode will be sent via Ariel (library software) to the Schwob Library’s ILL Office within 24 - 48 hours. You will need to call the Interlibrary Loan Office at 568-2451 to verify its arrival and specify your preferred method of delivery (campus mail or pick-up).
  • Once you locate an article that you need IMMEDIATELY, click on the “Add to Cart” button at the bottom of the screen. The next screen will show you the charges. Note that the default payment method is “csupayment.” (If you do not see this phrase on the screen, you have a problem. Make sure you are signed on with your special CSU account information.) Continue through the next few screens until you see the “Pay now” button. Click on it and you should have immediate access to the article, if it is available electronically. Fax/Ariel articles will be sent to the CSU ILL Office within 24-48 hours.
HOW DO YOU SET UP NEW ISSUE ALERTS?
Click on “New Issue Alerts” at the bottom right of the Ingenta screen in the shaded area. Then click on the “Add” tab and pull up the journal title list. Click on the “Add” boxes for those titles for which you would like to receive Table of Contents alerts. You may choose up to 5 titles.

To delete a title, click on the “Remove” box on the “Current” screen.
OTHER OPTIONS TO EXPLORE:

  • “Personal Subscriptions” under “Manage My Ingenta” allows you to receive electronic access to journals for which you have personal print subscriptions.
  • “Saved Searches” allows you to examine your previous searches.
  • You can mark articles as you browse.
  • Some articles now have article summaries to use to evaluate whether you really want to order the item.
  • Free or Trial Content is often available on IngentaConnect. A Blue F key denotes ‘free’ content and a Green T key denotes “free trial’ content.
