Dr. Rynetta Washington
Assistant Professor, Department of Management and Marketing
Dr. Washington earned a Ph.D. in Human Resource Management
and Organizational Analysis and Change from Auburn
University in Auburn, Alabama. Dr. Washington earned a M.S.
in Human Resource Management from Auburn University and a
B.S. in Psychology and Minors in Communication and Business
Management from Mississippi State University in Starkville,
Mississippi. Dr. Washington's research interests include
leadership (e.g., servant leadership), work attitudes, and
organizational behavior.

Dr. Jong Wook Ha
Associate Professor, Department of Management and Marketing
Dr. Jong Wook Ha earned a Ph.D. in International Business
from Georgia State University, an MBA from Seoul National
University, and a BA in Management from Pusan National
University in South Korea. He has served as a visiting
professor to the University of Liverpool, England and
University of Alabama and an invited scholar of
international research team by the Asia Pacific Center in
Japan. His research interests are in internationalization of
firms, foreign direct investment, international business
negotiations, and cross cultural communications.

Dr. Lei Li
Assistant Professor, Department of Management and Marketing
Dr. Lei Li received his Ph. D in Computer Information
Systems from Georgia State University (GSU), his Masters
degree in Computer Science from GSU, and his Bachelor degree
from China University of Mining & Technology. His research
interests include: knowledge management, specifically,
web-based information integration and user adaptation; and
software risk management.

Dr. John Finley
Assistant Professor, Department of Management and Marketing
Dr. John Finley Dr. Finley earned a Ph.D. in Romance
Languages from the University of Georgia. Dr. Finley earned
a M.S. in Spanish from the University of Georgia and an MBA
from Columbus State University. Dr. Finley's research
interests include International education impacts in
business disciplines, strategies for bankcard usage in
emerging markets, TSYS and its entry and expansion into
international markets, effects of bankcard associations
(MasterCard/Visa) on credit and debit card processing,
corporate rivalries such as Airbus vs. Boeing and the
effects on international business/law.

Dr. Thomas J. McCormack
Associate Professor, Counseling and Educational Leadership
and Professional Studies
Dr. McCormack earned his Ed.D. in Educational Administration
from Auburn University. While at Auburn he served as a
Truman Pierce Fellow. He has served at every level of public
school administration from elementary school assistant
principal through superintendent in five public school
systems. He taught at Louisiana Tech University as an
Assistant Professor in Educational Leadership and has taught
at Jacksonville State University and the University of
Tennessee Chattanooga. Dr. McCormack’s public school
teaching and administrative experience covers appointments
in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee.
He is a member of the American Association of School
Administrators.

Ms. Gayle Herrington
Assistant Professor, Department of Teacher Education
Gayle D. Herrington grew up in Northern Virginia where she
attended local area schools. She received her formal
training at Spelman College and North Carolina State
University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in
Mathematics and Masters of Education in Mathematics
Education, respectively. Ms. Herrington has taught high
school mathematics in Virginia and Georgia. She is currently
completing her doctorate in Mathematics Education from
Auburn University.

Dr. Rosa N. M. Williams
Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry and Geology and
the Coca-Cola Space Science Center
Dr. Williams comes to us from the Astronomy Department at
the University of Illinois where she occupied a
research/visiting instructor position since 2003. She earned
her PhD degree in 1999 at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign. Her research involves the study of diffuse
objects in the interstellar medium, specializing in the
study of supernova remnants. Dr. Williams will hold a tenure
track position at the assistant professor level, which is a
split appointment between the Department of Chemistry and
Geology and the Cocoa-Cola Space Science Center (CCSSC). Dr.
Williams will teach Astronomy courses and will serve as head
of the Mead Observatory at CCSSC.

Mr. Clinton I. Barineau
Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry and Geology
Mr. Barineau comes to CSU from the Department of Geological
Sciences at Florida State University where he is completing
his Ph.D. His research involves “Contrasting Fault Systems
of the Southern most Appalachian Talladega Belt. Mr.
Barineau previously occupied teaching positions at Valdosta
State University and Thomas University where he taught an
array geology courses. Mr. Barineau will teach a variety of
geology courses at all levels. He will also assist with the
department’s strategic recruiting efforts.

Dr. Kimberly A. Shaw
Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry and Geology
Dr. Shaw joins us from Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville where she served as chair of the Department of
Physics since 2003. She earned her Ph.D. in 1997 at Florida
State University during which her thesis dealt with
“Experimental Condensed Matter Physics”. Her current
research and area of expertise is physics education with
emphasis in gender equity issues, assessment of student
learning, and problem solving. Dr. Shaw will develop and
teach a new physical science course required for all
Early-Childhood Education majors. She will also teach
introductory physics courses and assist with recruiting
efforts in the department.

Dr. Kevin Burgess
Assistant Professor, Department of Biology
Dr. Burgess received both his B.S. and PhD. degrees in Plant
Biology from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.
Dr. Burgess has been a Curatorial Consultant for the
Organization of Tropical Studies at the Wilson Botanical
Garden in Costa Rica, an Assistant to the Curator at the
Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, a Research Assistant
at the Threatened Plants Unit at the
World Conservation Monitoring Center in Cambridge, England
and more recently, a Post doctoral Research Associate in the
Department of Biology at the University of Virginia.
He has also been a Teaching Assistant, a Co-instructor and a
Lecturer at the University of Guelph where he taught
Introductory Biology, Plant Ecology and Evolutionary
Biology.

Ms. Stephanie Lewis
Assistant Professor, Department of Nursing
Ms. Lewis is a new* full time nursing faculty member. She
earned her BSN from Purdue University and her MSN from the
University of Phoenix where she majored in Nursing
Education. She has 15 years of nursing experience and has
served as a CSU part time nursing clinical instructor for
two years. During her graduate work, she researched the
literature and developed a program to foster “caring” in the
curriculum, which is being implemented this fall.

Ms. Carlie Frederick
Temporary Assistant Professor, Department of Nursing
Ms. Frederick returns to us as a full time nursing faculty
member. She earned her BSN and MSN from Wayne State
University. She obtained a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
masters degree from Emory University. Carlie has 13 years of
teaching experience and 24 years of nursing experience. She
is credentialed as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and a
Clinical Specialist in Adult, as well as Child and
Adolescent, Psychiatric and Mental Health nursing.

Dr. Cheryl Smith
Temporary Associate Professor, Department of Nursing
Dr. Smith earned her BSN from Troy State University and her
MSN from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 1995,
she earned her EdD in Adult Education from Auburn University
where she has been teaching as an Assistant Professor of
Nursing for the past 8 years.

Dr. Stephanie da Silva
Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology and Sociology
Dr. Stephanie da Silva received her PhD in psychology in
1993 from West Virginia University. She joins us after
serving as an assistant professor at Anderson University in
SC. Her areas of expertise include behavior analysis and
theory, and her research encompasses broad areas of
behavioral history and choice. She has conducted research
using humans, as well as fish, birds, and non-human mammals.
She has also directed community workshops on positive
parenting in which she applied the principles of behavior
analysis and modification to child behavior. She will teach
sections of PSYC 1101 as well as upper division courses in
behavior analysis, behavior modification, motivation, and
the history of psychology.

Dr. Jenny Lee
Assistant Professor, Department of Health Science
Dr. Jenny Lee is an expert in lifestyle enhancement,
health science, and faith-health partnerships. She
holds graduate degrees in Exercise Science and
Neuro-Behavior (Ph.D.); Therapeutic Recreation (M.A.);
Exercise Physiology (M.S.), and Health Promotion and
Education (M.P.H.). Beginning in 2001, Dr. Lee has been
implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of lifestyle
enhancement programs in the community and faith-based
settings. She is presently a member of a multidisciplinary
collaborative team of investigators, evaluating the
effectiveness of a faith-health collaborative approach for
reducing risk factors for chronic disease. The project tests the effectiveness of the GoodNEWS
(Genes, Nutrition, Exercise, Wellness and Spiritual Growth)
Program she originally conceived while working at
Fayetteville State University, N.C.. As Director of
Faith-Based Initiatives for a large faith-based non-profit
organization in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Lee hopes to continue
providing comprehensive health and wellbeing intervention
programs and testing the interaction between the gene and
the environment, in order to improve individuals’ way of
living and associated health outcomes.

Dr. Alin A. Stancu
Department of Mathematics
Dr. Stancu is originally from Romania and recently finished
a post-doctoral position at Drexel University. He completed
his doctorate at the State University of New York at
Buffalo. His research interests are in homological and
commutative algebra. As a graduate student at SUNY-Buffalo,
his department nominated him for the excellence in Teaching
Award.

Dr. Josephine Moore
Temporary Assistant Professor, Department of Biology
Dr. Moore received her B.F.A. in Studio Art from the
University of Texas at Austin, her B.S. in Biochemistry from
Texas A & M University, and her Ph.D in Physiology from
Oregon Health and Science University.
Dr. Moore comes to us from Andrew College in Cuthbert, GA.,
where she recently served as the Director of Institutional
Advancement.

Mrs. Rachel Belew
Temporary Assistant Professor, Department of Health Science
A graduate of Georgia State, Mrs. Belew has received both a
Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Nutrition and
Dietetics. Mrs. Belew is a Clinical Nutrition Specialist. In
her role as a nutrition specialist, she educates patients
within a clinical setting and consumers within the community
concerning the importance of nutritional consumption for all
age groups.

Dr. Elizabeth Wurz
Assistant Professor, Department of Basic Studies
Elizabeth Wurz comes to the Department of Basic Studies as a
newly-minted Ph.D in English from Georgia State University.
She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from New York
University and a BA in English from the University of
Arkansas. Her special interest is creative writing, and she
has a long list of poetry publications. Dr. Wurz was a
semi-finalist in the “Discovery” poetry contest in The
Nation. She has taught at Georgia Southwestern, Troy
University in Albany, and Albany State University.

Dr. Klas Borell
Fall 2007 Mildred Miller Fort Foundation Visiting
Scholar in European Studies.
Dr. Klas Borell is Professor of Sociology
at Mid-Sweden University in Ostersund. He received his Ph.D.
from Uppsala University (1989) and has previously held
visiting professorships at the University of Minnesota and
the American University of Beirut.
Dr. Borell has published four books and twenty articles and essays on topics
including aging, gender, and families. More recently he has
published on the topic of terrorism and its impact upon
societies. While at Columbus State University, Dr. Borell
will teach several courses over the year. We are also
anticipating he will give a public lecture dealing with
terrorism’s impact upon Lebanese society. This is
tentatively planned for October 2 during International
Education Week. Dr. Lifchitz scheduled to teach to two
courses titled “Selected Topics in Music: Modernism and
Nationalist: Latin American Masters” and “Modern Latin
America.”

Assistant Professor of Military Science
Major Savage received his BS from Pittsburgh State
University. MAJ Savage most recently served as Operations
Officer for the Deputy Chief of Staff, G2 at FORCES Command
in Atlanta, Georgia.

Master Sergeant Robert M.
Nichols
Senior Instructor of Military Science
Master sergeant Robert M. Nichols joins Columbus State
University as the Senior Military Instructor. He received
his AS from Columbus State University. MSG Nichols recently
served as the First Sergeant of Headquarters and
Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger
Regiment at Ft. Benning, GA.
